Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are cosmetic treatments that involve the application of a chemical solution to the skin to exfoliate and promote the regeneration of new, smoother, and healthier skin. These peels are often used to improve the appearance of various skin concerns, including fine lines, wrinkles, uneven skin tone, acne scars, and sun damage. The depth and intensity of the peel depend on the type of chemical used, its concentration, and the duration of application.

Here are the main types of chemical peels based on their depth:

  1. Superficial or Light Peels:

    • Targets the outermost layer of the skin (epidermis).
    • Typically uses mild acids such as alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs).
    • Minimal downtime and recovery.
    • Helps improve skin texture, tone, and mild pigment irregularities.
  2. Medium Peels:

    • Penetrates the outer and middle layers of the skin (epidermis and upper dermis).
    • Uses stronger acids, such as glycolic acid or trichloroacetic acid (TCA).
    • May address more noticeable skin imperfections like age spots, fine lines, and moderate skin discoloration.
    • Longer recovery time compared to superficial peels.
  3. Deep Peels:

    • Penetrates into the middle to lower layers of the dermis.
    • Utilizes strong acids, such as phenol.
    • Addresses more significant skin issues, including deeper wrinkles, scars, and precancerous growths.
    • Requires a more extended recovery period and is often performed under sedation or general anesthesia.
